Majority Chief whip Frank Annor-Dompreh says the majority has been vindicated given their caution to the embattled Assin North lawmaker before the swearing-in of the eighth parliament.
Frank Annor-Dompreh refuted the claims of the minority leader that the governing NPP has captured the courts, and tilting the judiciary in its favour.
According to him, the Nana Addo administration has nothing to do with the decision handed down by the Cape Coast high court Wednesday.
“If you’ll recall even before we were sworn in to be part of the 8th parliament abinitio in the chamber we as members of the majority had raised issue of eligibility related to the Assin North MP then. If you’ll recall there were dramatic representation even from our side and we had cautioned the implication of that decision for the Member to sit in and be part of that decision making on that day. Each one of you will bear witness and so today we have been vindicated because from Day one we have made our point abundantly clear that the Member was invalidly elected and lo and behold a court of proper jurisdiction has come to make a ruling.
“It’s much ado about nothing, we can understand them that this has unsettled them, but if they’d reflected upon it deeply especially the day of swearing-in, they would have realised that they were going on a wild goose chase,” Annor-Dompreh said in a rebuttal.
The NDC minority in parliament described as a travesty of justice the decision by Cape Coast high court to annul the parliamentary elections in the Assin North Constituency.
Addressing the media in parliament minority leader Haruna Iddrisu argued though the governing NPP has captured the courts, the NDC will use the same legal process to ensure the seat remains with the party.
The Tamale South MP hinted his side will no longer cooperate with the majority over what he terms manipulation of the courts to shore up NPP numbers in parliament.
“Danger begets our democracy with the development happening. But as I have assured you we remain unshaken, we remain very resolved and cooperation will suffer, nothing more,” he said.
The Cape Coast High Court has cancelled the 2020 Parliamentary election held in the Assin North constituency which saw the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) candidate Joe Gyakye Quayson being elected as Member of Parliament.
The Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 ordered for a fresh election to be conducted in the constituency.
The court has also restrained James Gyakye Quayson from holding himself as the MP for Assin North constituency.
The petitioner, Michael Ankomah Nimfah, went to court claiming that Quayson held dual citizenship as a Ghanaian and a Canadian at the time of his election, and therefore must be restrained from performing the duties of a Member of Parliament.
