Be measured in the margins you put on goods – Akufo-Addo to traders

President Nana Akufo-Addo has appealed to traders not to put huge margins on the goods they sell in the wake of the increasingly high cost of living in Ghana.

Many Ghanaians have lamented the frequent increases in the prices of food items on the market in recent times.

The price of 25-litre cooking oil is said to have jumped from GH¢380 to GH¢1000 within the last three months.

The price of a 25 kg bag of rice has shot up from GH¢195 last year to GH¢390, while a carton of chicken has shot up from GH¢125 per 10 kg in July to GH¢300.

Some traders are said to be hoarding some items while others have arbitrarily increased the prices of products.

But in a national address on Sunday evening, President Akufo-Addo urged the traders not to seek to profit unduly from the difficult financial hardship facing lots of Ghanaians.

“I hear from the market queens also that another factor fueling the high prices is the high margins that some traders are slapping on goods, for fear of future higher costs. I say to our traders, we are all in this together. Please let us be measured in the margins we seek. I have great respect and admiration for the ingenuity and hard work of our traders, especially those that take on the distribution of foodstuffs around the country, and I would hesitate to join in calling them names. I do make a heartfelt appeal that we all keep an eye out for the greater good, and not try to make the utmost profits out of the current difficulties.”
