Eight women get Ministerial positions in Akufo-Addo’s 2nd term

At least 8 women have been appointed into ministerial positions in President Akufo-Addo’s second term of office.

Per the Press release announcing the list, six (6) of them are Ministers and two (2) Regional Ministers.

They include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful who retained her Ministry, now branded as the Communications and Digitalisation Ministry.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region and former Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Freda Prempeh, who has been nominated as Minister of State-Designate for Works and Housing.

The former Minister of State responsible for Procurement, Sarah Adwoa Safo, now heads the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Mavis Hawa Koomsoon, who is the former Special Initiatives Minister now heads the Fisheries Ministry.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah and Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey get to retain their seats at the Sanitation and Water Resources and the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Ministries respectively.

Two new faces Justina Marigold Assan and Justina Owusu-Banahene have been nominated as Ministers for the Central and Bono Regions respectively.

The total number of Ministers to be appointed by President Akufo-Addo will not exceed eighty-five (85), down from the one hundred and twenty-six (126) seen in his first term in office.

Seven Ministries, namely Aviation, Business Development, Inner City and Zongo Development, Monitoring and Evaluation, Planning, Regional Re-organisation and Development, and Special Development Initiatives, have been realigned.

The Office of the Senior Minister has also been abolished. This has resulted in a total of twenty-eight (28) Ministries, down from the thirty-six (36) of his first term.

The President has also appointed a Minister for Public Enterprises, who will be operating directly under the ambit of the Presidency, and not from a Ministry. The Minister will oversee a major restructuring of the entire state-owned enterprises sector to improve the productivity and profitability of the sector.
