Ejura Prison Camp: 9 inmates freed after their fines were paid for them

Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning of St. Patrick Parish, Atebubu who doubles as a Tutor at Atebubu College of Education, and Mr. Nsowah Kwasi – Proprietor Prestige School, Amantin, have together paid fines for nine inmates at Ejura Camp Prison to set them free.

According to Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning, for the past seven years, he celebrates his birthday with inmates at an orphanage home or prison by donating items to them.

He said last year, he visited the Ejura Prison Camp during which he donated bags of rice, sugar, and other stuff. But after realizing that one could pay a fine to release an inmate who has a fine attached to his or her sentence, he decided that for this year, he will celebrate the important day of his life with inmates at the Ejura Prison Camp by further paying the fines for some of them to set them free.

He, therefore, paid GHC3,200 to set four inmates free.

Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning advised the freed inmates to stay away from social vices and other actions that could land them in trouble.

He also urged the general public not to stigmatize the freed inmates but rather encourage them to be law-abiding and hard-working citizens.

On his part, Mr Nsowah Kwasi disclosed that his motivation to help the inmates is based on Matthew 25:36 “I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.”

Mr Nsowah Kwasi who has been donating items to the prison camp stated that he decided to pay GHC5,000 to release 5 inmates.

He also promised to provide some funds to set up the former inmates during their first month after walking out free from the detention centre.

He promised to ensure that the former inmates are well integrated into the society so that they don’t go back into their former way of life which could land them in prison again.

The freed inmates in expressing their gratitude to the philanthropists promised to put on a new leaf and be law-abiding citizens.
