Fisheries Minister engages Oil Marketing Companies over premix fuel distribution

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson has engaged the Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) across the country to acquaint and discuss issues pertaining to the distribution of premix fuel.

The Minister has therefore asserted her readiness and willingness to combat individuals who seek for their personal interest at the detriment of the Ministry regarding the premix fuel.

Mrs Koomson also expressed her appreciation to all the stakeholders for attending the meeting and encouraged them to discharge their duties with due diligence.

The engagement was to allow the various OMC to voice out their challenges regarding the distribution of the Premix Fuel.

Upon her assumption of office, the Minister envisioned the need to interact with the OMC as well as other relevant stakeholders to reflect on the issues regarding the distribution of premix fuel.

The Administrator of National Premix Fuel Secretariat (NPFS), Nana Abrokwa Asare as part of his welcoming message highlighted the purpose of the gathering to the participants.

The meeting was also intended to equip the Minister with an in-depth knowledge of the issues confronting the premix fuel distribution and ascertain measures to address them.

The team was made up of Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), National Premix Fuel Secretariat (NPFS), Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) and Bulk Distribution Company (BDC).

Concerns

In the open forum and discussion, some of the pertinent concerns were raised by the OMC; are in respective of diversion of premix fuel distribution, slow loading pace of trucks at Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and coordinators and agents scaling up the problem of fuel distribution

The nature and form of premix fuel allocation to OMC was also a concerned as well as the unbridled powers of individuals in the Landing Beach Committees (LBC) and calls for a critical look at the structure of the LBC.

The issue regarding shortages of fuel is characterised by lack of storage facilities and improper calibration of tanks at the landing beaches.

A seven-member Committee

A seven-member Sub-Committee of National Premix Fuel Committee is expected to be constituted which will include representatives from National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and TOR.

The consortium will be tasked to take a holistic view of the system and devise predetermined standards to regulate and curtail the issue of diversion permanently.

Also, an independent body will be given the mandate to cross-check the report of the committee. Access to the tracking devices by Oil Marketing Companies will be considered to congeal stringent monitory of the trucks.
