KNUST Riot: GHS 1.6m needed to fix damages

About  1.6 million Ghana Cedis is estimated as cost of damage during students riots at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, officials say.

This according to authorities excludes stolen and looted items by the students when they went on rampage.

This comes on the back of a visit to the school today by the Chancellor of the University, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“As an institution, we cannot wait for the committee to finish its work. We are putting certain measures in place to fix some damaged properties within our strength before the re-opening of the school”, the University Relations Officer, Kwame Yeboah told a Press Conference.

Students of KNUST on Monday October 22, 2018 demonstrated on the campus against brutality by the University Security.

Over 30 vehicles were destroyed including property at the main Administration block and other facilities in the University.

The school has been closed down after the students violent demonstration but will reopen November 08, 2018 for normal academic work to resume.

A release by government signed by the Information Minister designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has also said the Council is expected to be reconstituted latest by Friday, November 02, 2018, which will take over from the Interim Council.
