Rawlings goes home today

The final funeral rites in honour of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings will be held today in the capital, Accra.

There will be a pre-burial service at the Black Star Square to be attended by scores of Ghanaians and a number of dignitaries.

Ex-President JJ Rawlings will be laid to rest today, January 27, 2021, at the Military Cemetery in Burma Camp to crown the four days of mourning activities.

President Akufo-Addo, the Vice President and other government officials will be in attendance to bid farewell to the former Ghanaian leader. Also the Liberia President George Weah and Sierra Leone President, Julius Maada Bio are among the foreign dignitaries expected to attend the funeral.

Others include Mamadou Tangara, The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Ibn Chambas, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel as well as delegations from the ECOWAS Commission, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.

The former President died at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital after a short illness on November 12, 2020.

The four day State funeral started on Sunday, January 24, with a Catholic Requiem mass held for the statesman.

Later that night, a vigil was held at the Air Force Officers Mess in Accra in honour of late Jerry John Rawlings.

The vigil was attended by the family of Mr. Rawlings, government officials, dignitaries, and other senior officers of the various security agencies.
