The Police Administration has denied claims that a uniformed person seen kicking a young man kneeling before some civilians in a viral video on social media is a policeman.
According to the Police, the said man is a civilian, a Metropolitan guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly.
The Police in a statement signed by ASP Simon Tenku, for Director-General/Public Affairs, said its preliminary investigations reveal that at about 3:00 pm on Thursday, 21st March 2019, at Agona Swedru in the Central Region, the victim was arrested by the civilians including Metropolitan guards for an alleged offence.
“The Civilians started assaulting the victim/suspect. However, when the attention of a Police Officer on duty nearby was drawn to the scene, the officer went to the rescue of the victims and filed a report at the Agona Swedru Police Station.
“The Police Administration hereby emphasizes that the person seen kicking the victim in the video is not a police officer,” the statement added.
The incident comes on the back of a recent incident where some policemen assaulted journalists working with the Ghanaian Times Newspaper.
The IGP, David Asante-Apeatu has since interdicted the three Police officer.
