Police in the Upper West Region has detained a Burkinabe who was caught with a pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition at a Catholic Church at Hamile Sunday morning.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander DCOP Okyere Kwadwo Boa-Appiah who confirmed the incident said the suspect was arrested following a tip-off by a church member.
“The Police had a report that a Burkinabe who was worshipping at the Catholic church in Hamile was in possession of a foreign pistol. So the Police moved in and when he was searched a foreign pistol was found on him with two rounds of ammunition. When he was questioned why he brought the pistol to the church he couldn’t give any tangible explanation. The pistol was in his pocket and part of it was exposed so somebody sitting behind him saw the exposed part of the pistol and that was how it was detected. When the person sitting behind him saw the pistol he informed the church leaders and he was handed over to the Police.”
DCOP Okyere Kwadwo Boa-Appiah added that when the suspect was further interrogated he said he’s a trained carpenter but has come to Hamile farming.
The suspect is currently in custody at the District Police headquarters in Jirapa.
