Parliamentary crisis: According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC is headed for war

Following the recent events in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, has claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is stoking chaos.
He said this to the media on Thursday, November 7, 2024, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s second adjournment of Parliament because of the NPP members’ absence.

The NDC is obviously headed towards conflict. They want disorder and disarray in our country, and Mr. Speaker is overseeing all of this,” he stated.

For this reason, Mr. Afenyo-Markin has urged the media to “call the NDC out, to call Mr. Speaker out.”
With just two months until the general election in December, Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Sumana Bagbin formally announced the vacancy of four parliamentary seats in October of this year, sparking the start of the parliamentary crisis.

The majority side, backed by Independent Member of Parliament Andrew Amoako Asiamah, will now lean towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a result of this decision, which handed the ruling New Patriotic Party a tiny advantage in Ghana’s hung parliament.

However, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MP for the Central Region’s Efutu constituency, contested the Speaker’s statement in the Supreme Court, hoping the Court would reverse the vacancy decision. Speaker Alban Bagbin responded by stating that his announcement was legitimate and asking the Court to overturn its ruling.
On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the Supreme Court’s Justice Gertrude Torkornoo denied the Speaker’s request to reverse its previous decision following a full day of proceedings.
The Speaker adjourned parliament for the second time on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Since then, the new development has caused more disagreement among the House’s NPP members.
