A flight operated by Ethiopian Airlines lands at Kumasi Prempeh I International Airport.

Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH8719 has landed in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, at the Prempeh I International Airport.
According to Nana Yaw Gyimah of Joy News, the flight landed on Friday, December 6, 2024, at around 10:30 a.m.

After achieving international status, it is the first international flight to touch down at the airport. This is a component of Ghana’s larger objective to improve the air transportation system, especially for locations outside of Accra, the country’s capital.

Amidst drumming and dance, a few traditional leaders from the Kumasi Metropolis were there at the airport to greet the travellers.
A major change to the itinerary for the first direct flight from London Gatwick to Kumasi Prempeh I International Airport was announced by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The GACL blamed the postponement on short notice for the direct flight’s delayed start, which was originally scheduled for December 3, 2024.

The first flight is a component of a large-scale new project that highlights Kumasi’s increasing significance as a Ghanaian transport hub.

Ghanaians’ social media responses to the news and the ensuing postponement were mixed, with some speculating that it was a fake.

Improving communication between Kumasi and the UK

Ethiopian Airlines and the Ghana Airports Company collaborated to provide the flight between London Gatwick and Kumasi. The goal of this new route is to improve connections between Ghana’s second-largest city, Kumasi, and the UK.

Given that Kumasi is currently on track to become the first Ghanaian destination to receive a direct international flight outside of Accra, this represents a major advancement for air travel to the area.

The actions taken by GACL demonstrate the importance of the Kumasi route for regional growth, especially in terms of trade, investment, and tourism. A more comfortable direct route will now be available to those who previously had to take connection flights through Accra, possibly creating new opportunities for exploration and local economic development. It is anticipated that this action will facilitate travel to Kumasi for both foreign visitors and business travellers who wish to experience Ghana’s cultural and commercial offers.

The worldwide influence on tourists

This new flight is a great opportunity for foreign travellers, especially those who are situated in the UK. It will be simpler to get to Kumasi and the neighbouring areas thanks to the direct flight from London Gatwick to Kumasi. In the past, passengers had to make connections in Accra or other international airports, which might be expensive and time-consuming. This service creates new opportunities for travellers who might have previously passed up Kumasi in favour of easier-to-get-to locations by providing a more direct path.
