A/R: Agona Akrofonsohene reelected Ashanti region rep at Council of State

A former Ashanti regional representative on the Council of State, Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, has retained his position in the Friday, 12 February 2021 election held in Kumasi.

The chief of Agona Akrofonso polled 77 votes out of 86 cast by delegates
in the election contested by six people.

His main contenders, chief of Bonwire, Nana Bobie Ansah II; had six votes while the assembly member for Fankyinebra electoral area James Nana electoral manage a little of three votes. The other candidates did not secure any vote.

Eight candidates initially set out to contest the Ashanti regional representative position on the Council of State, however, Justice Baffour Awuah a broadcast journalist and James Adusei Sarkodie former MP withdrew few minutes before the start of the polls.

Each district in the region presented 2 delegates who were presiding members and district Chief executives constituting an electoral college of 86 people.

The voting process suffered a number of breaks which nearly become chaotic because some delegates refused to abide by the voting rules of keeping their votes secrete without taking pictures of the ballot paper while ton printing.

However, Ashanti regional director of the Electoral Commission Benjamin Bannor-Bio and her deputy insisted the Assembly members do the right thing with the support of the police to take away any delegates who will violate the electoral rules halting voting processing for some time.

After closing of the poll, the twice-elected Ashanti regional Council of State member Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong in his victory speech commended delegates from the various districts assemblies for the confidence reposed in him to represent this region.

He said, he will ensure the region which has sent him to counsel the president get its share of the national cake for its further development.
