On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, there was a shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint where a stray bullet struck a bystander.
When Customs Division agents attempted to arrest suspected smugglers, they fired warning shots at the person, who was within a few meters from the checkpoint.
The victim was taken right away to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are presently being treated and receiving medical care.
An investigation into the incident’s circumstances has subsequently been started by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
A alleged uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 vehicle was being smuggled into Ghana from Togo when the event happened.
After officers tried to halt the car after receiving information about it, the occupants fled. Warning bullets were fired in retaliation, which led to the regrettable injury.
The public has received assurances from the GRA that a comprehensive investigation is in progress. Furthermore, in carrying out its responsibility to safeguard national revenue, the authority has reiterated its dedication to guaranteeing the safety and security of all parties involved.
“We express our condolences to those impacted by the regrettable event that transpired during revenue protection at the nation’s borders and are steadfast in our commitment to our mission of guaranteeing the safety and security of all stakeholders,” the GRA said.
