Context

On April 22, President John Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after three petitions to remove her from office resulted in the establishment of a prima facie case against the nation’s fourth-highest official.

A five-member committee was also established by the president to look into petitions against the top judge.

Following discussions with the Council of State, the Presidency issued a statement announcing the action, which complied with constitutional norms.
The President referred to Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which requires that if a prima facie case is produced against a superior court judge, a committee be formed to investigate the charges.
According to the statement, President Mahama decided that there are enough reasons to justify more investigation.
