After an odd penalty was denied, Real Madrid defeated Atletico.

Atlético Madrid v Real Madrid: Champions League last 16, second leg – as it happened | Champions League | The Guardian

In the shootout, Real Madrid defeated their city rivals to advance to the quarterfinals, and Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid had a penalty spectacularly disallowed.
They have maintained their hopes of earning a record-extending 16th Champions League trophy, and they will now play Arsenal in the round of eight.

After Real Madrid’s 2-1 first-leg victory, Conor Gallagher’s goal just 27 seconds into the match tied the tie on aggregate, but neither team was able to find a winning goal before the end of extra time.
Consequently, penalties were required to decide the result, and Alvarez, a former Manchester City forward, went up to take Atletico’s second after the first three had been converted.

The ball wound up in the back of the net, but he slid taking it. Although it was awarded, the visual assistant referee (VAR) later disallowed the successful spot-kick because Alvarez was judged to have touched the ball twice during his attempt.
Atletico keeper Jan Oblak saved Lucas Vazquez’s penalty kick to give Atletico a brief hope, but Marcos Llorente struck the bar after Fede Valverde converted his penalty to put Real ahead 3-1.

Then, Antonio Rudiger took over and scored the game-winning penalty to give Real Madrid a 4-2 victory.

Atletico is frustrated, but Real continues to go forward.

Atletico will be quite disappointed with the result because they played excellent defence for most of the game, limiting Real to few opportunities.

Gallagher, an England international, became the first Englishman to score in a Madrid derby when he stabbed in after a swift Atletico move down the right, giving them a dream start.
After then, Real had very little chance against a disciplined and well-organised home team that hadn’t lost a knockout match at home since Ajax defeated them in 1997.
Thibaut Courtois, at the opposite end, denied the animated Alvarez three times.

The Frenchman Kylian Mbappe had been kept mostly quiet, but when he managed to break free from his opponents, he exploded and was pulled down inside the box by Clement Lenglet, earning him a penalty.

With 20 minutes remaining, Vinicius Jr., who had scored all seven of his prior penalties for Real Madrid, had the opportunity to give Real the lead once more, but the Brazilian slammed his attempt far over the bar.

Real, who defeated Atletico in the 2014 and 2016 finals, advanced by maintaining a perfect record against their deadly rivals in penalty shootouts. After that, there was nothing separating the teams in a tight derby.
