Amid growing tensions in the mining town, AngloGold Ashanti Schools students in Obuasi are scheduled to resume classes on January 27, 2025.
In a statement, the school administration announced that the reopening date has been extended in expectation of a return to normalcy, even though they had previously given notice of reopening on Wednesday, January 22.
The statement said, “Management is continuing broader consultations with relevant authorities to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being upon reopening.”
The decision comes after careful analysis of the town’s circumstances to ensure peace is completely restored to protect students, employees, and other interested parties.
On Monday, it is anticipated that the Williams and Brew School and AGA Schools will be bustling with activity.
Due to security concerns, both public and private schools have been closed since the town’s violent conflict between the military and several illegal miners.
Since the schools only reopened three weeks ago, the circumstance is affecting their academic performance.
According to the AGA Schools’ management, steps have been taken to modify the academic calendar to make up for the lost contact hours.
“We will modify the academic calendar to compensate for the lost contact hours, especially for our candidates preparing for the Cambridge IGCSE, Checkpoint Examinations, and the 2025 BECE,” the statement said.
