Appiatse explosion victims laid to rest

A burial service has today been held for some six victims of the fatal January 20th explosion at Appiatse in the Western Region.

The burial took place at Appiatse Park in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly.

Earlier some four victims upon request of their families were buried last weekend.

The six included Ekua Nyame, 80, Justice Kwesi Takwa, 21, Emmanuel Quainoo, 29, Isaac Benyin, 45, and Michael Afriyie, 19 and 15-month-old Ella Baidoo.

35-year-old Isaac Anane, whose remains were part of the funeral, was taken to Dumase on the Bogoso-Prestea Road for burial.

Meanwhile, two other deceased will be sent to their various hometowns for burial upon the request of their families.

Speaking at the burial service, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu Bio, consoled the families for their loss.

He further assured the people of Appiatse of government’s dedication to complete the temporary accommodation as soon as possible as they also focus to rebuild the Appiatse community in 12 months.

The families expressed their gratitude to government for its support in such dire times, lamenting how the vacuum created by the loss of their relatives is irreplaceable.

Background

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, a DAF truck carrying dynamites, with registration number, WR 2252-18, said to be driven by Mr Alfred Pappoe, en route to the Chirano Gold Mines in the Western North Region, exploded, killing at least 13 people.

The explosion occurred at Appiatse, which is between Bogoso and Bawdie, after an earlier accident involving a motorcycle, Pragya and other vehicles resulted in the motorbike sliding under the truck carrying the explosives.

According to a police situational report, the motorcycle, in the process, caught fire and ignited the truck, which detonated the explosives estimated at about 10 tonnes, resulting in the blast.
