C/R: 13 children drown in Sea at Apam

Thirteen children have died in the Sea at Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region while swimming.

The deceased are said to be pupils between the ages of 9 and 13 years old.

EIB Network’s Central Regional Correspondent Yaw Boagyan reported that as at 2:00pm, 13 bodies had been retrieved by the traditional Asafo company group after Chiefs poured a libation to pacify the sea god to release the bodies.

He added that a search is still on by local divers to retrieve other bodies as it is suspected that the children who went swimming were about 20 in number.

The Apam District Police Commander DSP Moses Osakono confirmed the incident, adding that it is unfortunate that residents have not heeded their caution as they have been warning them to stay away from swimming in the sea because the government has placed a ban on swimming in the sea as part of COVID-19 restrictions.

According to him, the bodies which have been deposited at the St. Luke’s Catholic Hospital morgue will be released to the respective families after identification has been done.
