Due to an incident that compelled the Electoral Commission to issue a recall and reprint ballots for the two areas, the Western and Eastern areas will not participate in Monday’s special election on December 2.
There are 131,478 voters on the special voting list and 328 special voting locations nationwide for the general election in 2024.
Following the discovery of a leak in the original ballots, the Electoral Commission has mandated a recall and reprinting of the ballots for the Eastern and Western Regions.
During an extraordinary press conference on Sunday, December 1, Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Commission, made this announcement.
The Commission claims that this is now required after National Security notified them that one defaced paper was removed from the Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House.
Although the disfigured paper was intended to be destroyed, it unintentionally made its way out of the company that has been collaborating with the Commission since 1992.
BuckPress and Innolink will handle the reprinting.
Consequently, it declared that the two regions whose ballots were printed by Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House would not be participating in the special voting process that was scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday.
Prior to the general election on Saturday, December 7, the two areas will hold their special vote on Thursday, December 5.
It states that in order to distinguish the ballots from those that have already been distributed, the security elements of the ballots for the two regions will be improved.
According to the Commission, the purpose of the complete recall is to protect the election’s integrity.
It states that all political parties and candidates have been made aware of the development and have consented to the recall and reprinting.
Due to some mistakes in the original printing, the EC also reissued ballots for Ahafo and the Volta Region prior to this occurrence.
Additionally, the Commission has identified a discrepancy in the ballots sent to certain areas and is attempting to address it.
