E/R: We don’t engage in illegal fishing – Opoku-krom fisherfolk

Fisher folks at Opoku-Krom near Simpoa in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern region have refuted the claim that they are into illegal fishing.

Their denial comes after community members of Kansanso in the Ashanti Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti region drew the attention of traditional, municipal and regional authorities to implement strict measures to help protect their fishing activities on the Afram river which shares boundary with the Eastern region.

This is because some individuals are poising the river with aim of having a bounty harvest of fish.

However, responding to the allegation leveled against them, the fisherfolk at Opokukrom described the accusation as false.

The spokesperson for the opinion leaders at Opoku-Krom Mr. Gabriel Tunomor said, the activities of “Ategya” which the people of Kansanso described as illegal is not and have been in existence since time immemorial and they (Opoku-Krom residents) believe it is just a mere jealous on the side of their accusers.

Meanwhile, Kwahu Baamuhene -Nana Ntim Sampong ll speaking to Samuel Owiredu Acheampong indicated that claims made by the residents of Kansanso are false allegations and therefore the traditional council is planning to hold a dialogue with these two towns to resolve the long overdue misunderstandings.
