Ernest Kumi’s swearing-in as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency has been temporarily halted by the Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region.
After a disagreement between the NDC and NPP, the two major parties running in the constituency, over the results compilation, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced Mr. Kumi as the winner three weeks ago.

Henry Boakye-Yiadom, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, has sued Ernest Kumi, the EC, and the Clerk to Parliament, requesting an injunction to stop Mr. Kumi’s swearing-in.

Following the hearing of the lawsuit, the court issued an order that forbade Mr. Kumi from being acknowledged as Akwatia’s MP-elect.

“The respondents, their representatives, agents, servants, and all privies are restrained from proceeding to call, admit, register, swear in, recognise, or gazette the first respondent (Ernest Kumi) as the elected Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency,” the court’s order reads.
Additionally, Mr. Kumi was told by the court not to “hold himself as the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency.”

For ten days, the order will be in force.

After multiple failed attempts to finalise the results in the Eastern Region, the EC declared Ernest Kumi the winner at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra.

Henry Boakye-Yiadom of the NDC received 17,206 votes, compared to 19,269 for Mr. Kumi.

Once an NPP stronghold, the Akwatia constituency is now a battlefield for the NDC.
