The family of the final year student of the Tweneboah Kodua Senior High School in the Ashanti Region who died after injuring himself while escaping from a teacher has accused school authorities of dereliction of duty.
According to the family, the school authorities failed woefully in attending to the injured even though colleagues of the deceased insisted that he be sent to the hospital for treatment.
Speaking to Ejura-based Naagyei FM, Ambrose Duut, an uncle of the deceased student stated that he’s confident that if the school authorities had attached any urgency in seeking treatment for the student he would have survived.
He added that the family’s investigation in the school shows that the account given by the school authorities as the circumstances leading to the boy’s death is not true.
“We are told from our investigation in the school that the incident occurred at about 8:50 but our son was taken to the hospital at about 11:30pm to 12:00pm. The charged student reportedly seized the Prep Master who was walking away and refused to attend to the boy who had gotten injured and asked him to take the injured student to the hospital for treatment. The Senior Housemaster also failed to act timeously to save our son’s life. Eventually, the Headmaster then came in and transported the injured student to the hospital where he unfortunately died. We are confident that if the school authorities had attended to our son earlier he wouldn’t have died.”
Earlier reports claimed the deceased, Edward Duut, 19, together with other students upon learning of the presence of the Teacher around 8:40pm run helter-skelter but Edward who had just woken up from sleep jumped the wall but could not land well on the ground floor of the building injuring himself in the process.
He was then rushed to the Kumawu Polyclinic at about 12:00am where he died.
The Kumawu District Police Commander, DSP Opoku Agyemang Prempeh confirmed the incident but added that no suspect has been picked in connection with the case.
