The administration intends to eliminate a number of taxes, including the COVID-19 Levy, the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), and the 10% lottery wins tax (betting tax), according to the Finance Minister.
These legislation are anticipated to be presented to Parliament on Wednesday, March 13, according to Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
On Tuesday, March 11, Dr. Forson said on JoyNews PM Express, “I am going to Parliament tomorrow morning to submit the bills, and I anticipate that Parliament will take them through a certificate of urgency.”
Dr. Forson’s remark during the March 11 presentation of the government’s first budget statement prompted the decision to eliminate these levies.
The administration has suggested doing away with the Emissions Tax and other charges, as well as the E-Levy and betting tax.
On the basis of this, he said he was certain that the repeals would happen quickly because they were straightforward.
There will be a single clause for each tax repeal. “It is very easy to repeal the betting tax, the e-levy, and all of those things,” he continued.
According to the Finance Minister, the legislation’ nature permits them to be presented under a certificate of urgency, guaranteeing a prompt procedure.
He said, “It’s a revenue bill, and you have the constitutional right to place finance bills under a certificate of urgency.”
Dr. Forson promised that President John Dramani Mahama would sign the legislation into law right away if they were approved by Parliament.
Dr. Forson continued, “I promise that tomorrow I will complete my bid and submit it to Parliament. Given the urgency of the situation, I’m hopeful that Parliament will go through the various stages and approve it for us.”
The Finance Minister said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority caucus fully supports the plan in response to questions on legislative support.
“We have 100% support from the NDC Majority caucus,” he said.
