According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the terrible fire that destroyed Accra’s Kantamanto Market on Thursday, January 2, 2025, may have been caused by arson or an electrical malfunction.
Around 1:19 a.m., the fire broke out, destroying more than 100 stores and causing hardship for the traders.
According to the GNFS, initial enquiries indicate that poor electrical connections, a prevalent problem in the market, might have been the source of the incident. Arson hasn’t been completely ruled out, though. “We suspect electrical faults, but there are also indications that this could have been a deliberate act,” said public relations officer Alex King Nartey. The facts are being established through an ongoing investigation.
Millions of cedis’ worth of products were destroyed in the fire, and distressed dealers begged the government to step in.
Obstacles made it difficult for firefighters to reach the burning area. This made it more difficult for them to quickly put out the fire.
