The Government of Ghana has placed a temporal ban on the importation of excavators into the country effective May 1, 2019.
The move, according to a statement signed by the Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, is part of the government’s efforts at fighting illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.
The statement added that the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Trade and Industry have taken note of the directive by Cabinet.
The Akufo-Addo administration since assuming power in 2017 has waged a relentless war on galamsey which has over the years destroyed several water bodies and large acres of farmlands.
