John Mahama ends nationwide 'thank you tour' with public lecture today

John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been formally announced as the 2024 general election president-elect by Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The former president, Mr. Mahama, won by a wide margin in the nationwide elections that were held on Saturday, December 7.

Jean Mensa, the EC chairwoman and returning officer, reports that Mr. John Mahama received 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the vote, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
However, she clarified that because of unresolved concerns with nine constituencies whose results have not yet been received, the results were compiled from 267 constituencies.

She went on to say that according to the EC’s calculations, John Mahama’s victory would remain unchanged if the results of the nine seats, or just over 947,000 votes, were added to the first runner’s total.
The votes of Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama differ by 1,671, 093.

The results of the nine constituencies will finally be compiled and added to the results for the Commission’s record, according to the EC chair.

According to Jean Mensa, there were 239,109 rejected ballots out of 11,191,422 valid votes.

While there were 18, 774, 159 votes on the register, 11, 430,531 ballots were cast.

Based on 267 constituencies, the voter turnout rate for the 2024 election is 60.9%.

Ghanaians cast ballots over the weekend to choose a new president and members of parliament (MPs).

The NDC has gained enough seats to secure a definite majority in parliament, despite the fact that several seats are still up for debate.
Due to problems with attempted rigging and delays in the compilation of results in several constituencies, the exercise, which had begun calmly on Saturday morning, later descended into pandemonium in various regions of the nation.
Three people have been killed and numerous others injured in the violence that followed the election. To date, 89 persons have been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service for a variety of election-related offences.

At a press conference, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi advised supporters to refrain from stirring up conflict.

In a different press conference, Salam Mohammed Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, denounced the acts of NDC supporters.

He urged the cops to move quickly to stop more commotion.
