Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has come under fire from Movement for Change founder and flagbearer Alan Kyerematen for his recent support of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the nominee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the general elections of 2024.
Former President Kufuor urged Ghanaians to back Dr. Bawumia in the December elections, calling him the best person to lead the country in an interview with a small group of journalists on Sunday, November 17.
The former president highlighted that he thinks Bawumia’s administration may greatly boost Ghana’s economy, especially in light of the current state of the world.
“Given the current state of the world, I sincerely think that if Bawumia were elected president, Ghana’s economy would see significant growth,” Kufuor said. “I implore you to support his candidature because, with divine guidance, he is more than capable of keeping this promise.”
“During my administration, I witnessed his exceptional economic acumen since he was a vital member of the Bank of Ghana’s staff under

Alan Kyerematen responded negatively to Mr. Kufuor’s comments, saying that the former president’s support undermines the objectivity that a statesman of Kufuor’s calibre should possess.
On Monday, November 18, Mr. Kyerematen stated on Oyerepa TV that Kufuor’s actions might damage his long-standing political reputation.
“I hesitate to publicly criticise Kufuor because he is my uncle,” Kyerematen stated. But his political career has been significantly tarnished by his endorsement. Have you observed how his remarks have caused the public to respond negatively and criticise him?
Kyerematen went on to express his concerns regarding Kufuor’s involvement in active politics at this stage, suggesting that it could damage the respect he commands across the country.
Why would he decide to get involved in partisan politics in this way when he has long been regarded as a respected figure in Ghana? “His behaviour is unfortunate, and he is going in a risky direction,” he continued.
Even though Kyerematen has family ties to Kufuor, he did not hold back from pointing out that the support has already sparked criticism.
He said that Kufuor “knows exactly what he is doing” and asked the former president to change his mind.
Kyerematen has positioned himself as a strong contender to defeat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP in the next elections after leaving the NPP to head his newly established Movement for Change.
