A plan to close the Kejetia Market in Kumasi on Saturday, December 07, 2024, has been opposed by the vendors who own stores there.
The traders claim that, given the state of the economy, the market’s closure will have an impact on their means of subsistence.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, made the suggestion during a meeting with market representatives at the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 03, 2024, the merchants, however, rejected the proposition, stating that it lacked any rationale.

KUMASI KEJETIA MARKET CLOSURE ON ELECTION DAY OPPOSITION
December 3, 2024
The Kumasi Kejetia Queen Mothers Association is adamantly against the Kejetia market’s scheduled closure on December 7, 2024, election day.
This decision comes after we strongly rejected a proposal made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, during a meeting at the Kumasi Culture Centre.
Even though we first rejected, we now know that Hon. Samuel Pyne, the mayor of Kumasi, has directed the market management to move on with the shutdown.
Given the current state of the economy and the fact that Friday, December 6, 2024, is a holiday, we implore the market management to reevaluate this decision in light of the negative impact it will have on our businesses.
We, the Market Queen Mothers, will vehemently oppose any attempt to close the market and oppose this decision.
We urge the market management to reverse the decision and put traders’ interests first.
