When Liverpool won the 2024–25 Premier League, they tied Manchester United for 20 top-flight championships.
In England, the clubs are tied for the most league titles.
Prior to 1992, when the Premier division took over as England’s top division, Liverpool had won 18 of its 20 titles.
Liverpool had won eighteen games at the time, while Manchester United had won seven. The Reds won 11 titles between 1973 and 1990 during their heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.
Sir Alex Ferguson managed all 13 of Manchester United’s Premier League titles, including the first in 1993 and the 13th in his final season 20 years later.
“Disturbing Liverpool’s dominance”
Ferguson, who had won seven Premier League titles, seemed under pressure in 2002 when Arsenal won the league by a margin of 10 points over United.
If that was his biggest obstacle, the Scot was asked.
“My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment,” he stated. “Killing Liverpool off their [expletive] perch was my biggest struggle. You can print that as well.
Liverpool’s 18 league titles were equalled by United seven years later. Before Ferguson retired with them two ahead, they made progress in 2011.
The Red Devils will finish this season in the bottom half and haven’t won the championship since.
When Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy for the first time in June 2020, they won their 19th league title. The Covid-19 epidemic only slightly postponed their 30-year wait.
