This afternoon, several foreign nationals were caught trying to smuggle kilogrammes of gold out of the country by the GoldBod and National Security.
This is a component of the stepped-up campaign on illicit gold shipments.
According to information obtained by JoyNews from reliable sources, a number of foreign nationals were detained while attempting to transport a significant amount of gold.
The Ghana Gold Board and National Security personnel worked together on the operation.
The Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which forbids the unlawful export of gold, is broken by the alleged smuggling effort.
At a news conference being held at the National Security Headquarters in Accra, more information was revealed.
Three of the six foreign nationals detained for smuggling gold will be deported, according to the GoldBod.
The new legislation pertaining to gold trading will result in prosecution of the remaining three.
During the press briefing, Prince Minkah, the Ghana Gold Board’s (GoldBod) spokesperson, revealed the decision.
Six people were captured in two different raids.
Before the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) went into effect, the first group of three suspects was taken into custody in the Ashanti Region.
Since these people were arrested prior to the deadline of April 30 for foreigners to leave Ghana’s local gold trade, they will be deported.
“They will be repatriated to their home country to reunite with their families,” Minkah said.
Following the implementation of the new law, the second group of three suspects was taken into custody in Anyinam.
The new law, which reserves local gold transactions only for the Gold Board, will prosecute these individuals. Cash (USD) and gold counting machines were seized by the authorities.
