Claims that she was invited for an inquiry by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) have been denied by the attorney for the former Deputy Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah claims that Gifty Oware-Mensah has not been contacted by any security agency to be questioned.
“The BNI had not extended an invitation to her until today. She has not received an invitation from any security agency as of yet.
He said on JoyNews PM Express, “I am putting it on record, Gifty Oware has not been invited by any security agency up until today.”
He clarified that there were rumours that the NIB was looking for Madam Oware-Mensah and that she had escaped when Kwaku Ohene Djan, a former NSA Deputy Executive Director, was arrested.
He claimed that in order to make it clear that she had not left the country, they wrote to the intelligence service.
“We wrote because Kwaku Ohene had absconded and the BNI was searching for her after her arrest, according to numerous newspapers.
“The president later made a similar reference in Parliament, however her name was left out. Therefore, we deduced that all references were to her after putting the pieces together,” Mr. Awuah stated.
Madam Oware-Mensah willingly returned to Ghana to allay any concerns regarding her availability, he added, despite the fact that she had not been formally summoned.
“Now, when you put these facts together, would you describe her as a flight risk?” asked the man.
The agreement was established to avoid needless tensions, Mr. Awuah said in response to remarks made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who suggested Madam Oware-Mensah will later appear before the NIB.
“The Minority Leader came to the conclusion that the rambo-style of arrest did not promote peace and might result in protests, which would not be good for the BNI’s mission after witnessing what had happened to Kwaku Ohene Djan.
“So he went out of his way to ensure that certain arrangements were made so that people were not picked up in that manner,” said Mr. Awuah.
“I’m putting it on record that Gifty has not been invited by anybody, so I don’t know who even briefed the president,” he said, expressing concern over the handling of information about his client. It’s regrettable.
