President-elect Mahama: We would create consensus rather than abuse the parliamentary majority.

Ghanaians have been reassured by President-elect John Dramani Mahama that his new government will not abuse the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) resounding legislative majority won in the recent elections.
Speaking during the National Chief Imam’s courtesy call, he declared his commitment to democratic governance and pledged to engage the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at every stage.

He insisted that he would govern as a Democrat and rejected the label of “supreme leader” that had been applied to him following the NDC’s overwhelming victory.

“I want to reassure our fathers and my father [National Chief Imam] that we would not abuse our parliamentary majority. Despite having a sizable majority—more than two-thirds—we will not abuse it.

He declared, “Instead of railroading everyone, we will ensure that we do things by consensus and consult with the NPP at every stage.”
Mr. Mahama asserts that “we can only move this country together if all of us work to move it together” and that no one political party can change Ghana’s fortunes without the assistance of everyone else, including religious organisations.

Thus, I can guarantee that we will collaborate. We will keep you informed. As your son, you have all been very kind to me by giving me wise wisdom. Nothing will change; I have enjoyed working with each and every one of you over the years. I am available for consultation at any moment if any of our leaders, including my fathers, would like to see me. Therefore, we kindly request that you keep praying,” he reassured the National Chief Imam.

Additionally, the president-elect promised his steadfast commitment to reviving Ghana and regaining its reputation as the “Black Star of Africa.”

Recognising the difficulties that lie ahead, Mr. Mahama said that winning the election was the “easy part” in comparison to the amount of effort needed to reconstruct the country.
He stressed that this term is his legacy, the last chapter of his political career, and he promised to do everything in his power to bring about long-lasting change.

“You can rely on me to put in my best effort to elevate Ghana to its rightful place.”
He conveyed his appreciation for the NDC’s triumph, characterising it as a humble honour.

Although optimistic about his chances of success, he admitted that the magnitude of the victory was daunting and encouraged his future appointments to rise to the difficulties, cautioning that things won’t be as they were before.
