“Principalities will be disappointed if they wish you the worst.” Once fully recovered, Mahama welcomes the vice president.

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang returned to Ghana on Friday after receiving medical treatment overseas, and President John Dramani Mahama welcomed her back with open arms, calling her recovery a victory over well-wishers and a moment of national relief.

“Those who wished harm upon the Vice President have been sorely disappointed by her recovery and return to Ghana,” President Mahama remarked at the Kotoka International Airport, where a team of government officials, family members, and religious members came to meet her.

“The principalities who were hoping for the worst will be extremely disappointed, and the prophets who emerged after your illness will be pleased that you have returned.”
President Mahama said that the Vice President’s homecoming was “a special day” for the country and conveyed his deep relief and thanks.

After falling ill on March 28, 2025, the Vice President was transported overseas for additional treatment after receiving initial care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). Following weeks of conjecture and public anxiety, the President referred to her return as “a special day for Ghana.”

“Everyone has been going through a difficult time, and many prayers were given for your safe return. Therefore, it is a unique day because you have returned to Ghana, looking happier and younger,” President Mahama stated.

First Lady Lordina Mahama, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Vice President’s Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, and other senior officials attended the welcome event. Members of the vice president’s family and Methodist Church leaders were also in attendance.

In a light-hearted moment, the President made a joke about the controversy surrounding his brief trip overseas while she was away. Even leaving the nation was challenging. The assembled dignitaries laughed as he quipped, “They threatened to impeach me for going to Togo while you were away.” “So, I’m really happy to see you again.”

He also related how the Vice President was told by doctors that she now appeared “20 years younger,” but they suggested that she rest for a bit.

President Mahama took the opportunity to consider the shortcomings of Ghana’s healthcare system, recognising that while the UGMC had been essential to her early treatment, its unfinished state restricted its ability to handle more complicated illnesses.

Although we constructed the UGMC, a classic hospital, it is still not yet equipped to manage some of these patients. In order to handle events like this locally in the future, it is imperative that we implement it as Professor Mills intended, he stated.

In a succinct speech, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang thanked Ghanaians for their prayers and kindness. She also commended President Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama for their persistent support during her recuperation, and thanked her Ghanaian and international medical professionals.
