Terminate ECG/PDS concession deal – NDC MPs

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) are demanding for the immediate termination of the concession agreement between the Government of Ghana represented by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Services (PDS).

According to the NDC MPs, their call for the termination of the deal follows the detection of some fraudulent activities in the entire concession agreement.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Thursday over the suspension of the ECG/PDS concession agreement by the government of Ghana, the Minority Caucus contend that the deal in its current state is inimical to the aspirations of the country’s power sector and can plunge the nation into dumsor because of choking debts.

NDC MP for Yapei/Kusawgu and former deputy Minister for Power who addressed the media said the situation in the energy sector is as a result of choking debts and not lack of capacity charges as alluded to by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta in his Mid-Year Budget Review presented to Parliament on Monday, July 29, 2019.

He said the concession if left to continue has the potential of destabilizing the whole energy sector with very serious consequences including rising cost of power and crippling power generation companies.

Meanwhile, the Minority caucus is alleging the Akufo-Addo administration manipulated the original deal and rushed out to handover the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to cabals in the New Patriotic Party(NPP).

“Unfortunately, however… upon assumption of office by the Akufo-Addo administration under the guise of the so-called local content participation, the government deliberately altered the original agreement in a manner and fashion to pave way for the contracts to be awarded to a cabal of companies that have no track record in the energy sector,” he stated during a press conference Thursday in Accra.

“This cabal …critical investigations revealed are not experienced in the power sector but rather a group of friends, cronies and NPP party apparatchiks contrary to the original goals, objectives and aspirations of the programme.” Facebook Twitter Google+ Pinterest
