After a High Court in Accra granted the New Patriotic Party’s mandamus application, directing the Electoral Commission to finish compiling and declaring the parliamentary results in four contested constituencies, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a notice of appeal.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) was also directed by the court to give the Electoral Commission sufficient security so that the procedures could be finished.
Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South are the constituencies. The NPP had said that the results announcement could not be upheld because the constituency processes were not completed.
By mandating the completion of all collation processes prior to declaring the winner of the election, the court upheld the NPP’s case and granted its mandamus application.
Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, the NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, announced shortly after the hearing on Saturday that the party would challenge the High Court’s decision.
Speaking to reporters following the Accra High Court’s ruling, Mr. Tameklo clarified that the party has prepared their notices of appeal to contest the ruling of the High Court, which had approved the mandamus application.
“This issue has not yet been resolved. No one ought to be tricked. This is not where it will end. “We are contesting the ruling,” he declared.
With just three days remaining before the newly elected Members of Parliament are sworn in, that notice of appeal has already been submitted.
