President Akufo-Addo’s claim that Ghana had resumed its pre-COVID economic growth trajectory has been contested by the John Mahama transition team.
Speaking at the joint transition team’s inauguration on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo said he was confident the economy had returned to its pre-crisis level during his first term in office.
The John Mahama transition team, on the other hand, disputes this, stating that there are still major obstacles in the nation’s economy.
“The facts are glaring; we are nowhere near the pre-COVID era, and we do not accept COVID as an excuse for the current economic situation,” said Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the transition team’s spokesperson.
“It is a stretch to suggest that we are suddenly out of the woods or that the economic problems have been resolved—they have not,” he added, criticising the President’s assertion. There is still a lot of suffering, including high inflation, a volatile currency rate, and faltering businesses.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is ready to address the country’s economic issues, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye underlined.
“The NDC has no illusions about the work that lies ahead. We are aware that we will inherit a financial mess and a broken economy. We’ll need to put in a lot of effort to get out of our rut,” he continued.
