An inquiry has been opened by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) into a gunshot incident that occurred on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint.
The incident happened as Customs Division agents were attempting to stop a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 vehicle from being smuggled into Ghana from Togo.
In a statement, GRA said that checkpoint police tried to arrest the car’s passengers after receiving information regarding the vehicle’s illegal entry.
But the suspects got out of the car and tried to escape on foot.
To prevent them from escaping, the officers retaliated by firing warning bullets. Unfortunately, a stray gunshot hit a spectator a few meters from the checkpoint.
The injured person was taken right away to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are presently being treated and receiving medical care.
The public has been reassured by the GRA that a comprehensive inquiry is being conducted to determine the incident’s circumstances.
Furthermore, in carrying out its responsibility to safeguard national revenue, the authority has reiterated its dedication to guaranteeing the safety and security of all parties involved.
In a statement, the GRA said, “We remain committed to our mission of ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders and express our sympathies to those affected by the unfortunate incident which occurred in the course of protecting revenue at the country’s borders.”
