The United States has announced a new visa limitation policy for those who are undermining Ghana’s democracy.

The United States has implemented a new plan to protect Ghana’s democracy.
Just one month before the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, this action, which takes the shape of a visa restriction policy, was taken.

“Anyone who is accountable for harming Ghanaian democracy will not be granted U.S. visas, according to a new policy announced today by the Department of State. This policy will go into force before to the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

“The United States’ readiness to impose visa restrictions if circumstances warrant is an example of our support for the aspirations of all Ghanaians for a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the people,” the October 28 statement added.

The “United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Ghana and around the world,” stated Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken in a news statement.

The statement clarified that neither the Ghanaian people nor the government are the target of the visa limitation policy, which would only be applied to certain people who threaten democracy.

The remainder of the statement can be seen below:

According to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Department of State is authorised to impose visa restrictions on those deemed accountable for or involved in undermining Ghanaian democracy, including through the manipulation of

The use of violence to intimidate, coerce, or prevent people from exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and association; the use of measures intended to intimidate, coerce, or prevent voters, members of civil society, political party representatives, or members of the media from expressing or disseminating their opinions; or any other activity intended to improperly influence the conduct or outcome of an election. These limitations might also apply to some of these individuals’ relatives. According to this policy, anyone who threatens Ghanaian democracy, especially before, during, and after the country’s 2024 elections, may not be granted a visa.
