Vice President and NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been praised by former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong as a leader of extraordinary integrity, saying he is the kind of leader Ghana needs today.

Since the election, Kwabena Agyapong, one of the ten contenders who ran alongside Dr. Bawumia for the NPP Flagbearer post, has vowed to support the vice president and will accompany him on his nationwide campaign.

Agyapong, who served as vice president for eight years, commended Dr. Bawumia’s honesty and character in a speech to the chiefs and residents of Adaklu in the Volta Region on Tuesday.

“This man has a high degree of integrity. During his eight years as vice president, no one has discovered any flaws in his record. That speaks much about his personality,” Agyapong said.

He cares about them, loves them, and understands them. He is the type of leader Ghanaians need, in my opinion.

Agyapong went on to say that Bawumia’s election as Ghana’s first Muslim leader of a major political party for a presidential race has been a turning point following years of propaganda portraying the NPP as an Akan-dominated party.

In addition to highlighting the historic nature of Bawumia’s victory and the substantial amount of votes he won, Agyapong said, “His election as NPP Flagbearer has laid to rest the perception of the NPP as an Akan party.”

“A lot of people were surprised by how easily he won. There were ten of us running, but he set a record for a first-time candidate in the history of our party by winning with 61%. On their first try, neither Nana Akufo-Addo, Kufuor, or Adu Boahene received a score of 61%. Dr. Bawumia did.

Agyapong went on to emphasise Bawumia’s wide support across political parties.

“Bawumia is well supported throughout the country. Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists all support him as a contender. He is respectful everywhere he goes and demands respect in return.
