National Security did not tamper with #FixtheCountry protest convener – Oppong Nkrumah

Minister of Information has rejected claims by a convener of the #FixtheCountry movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor that National Security operatives are unlawfully monitoring the phone records of one of the prospective protesters.

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor speaking on JoyNews, Newsfile, Saturday, alleged that the only Android phone members of the movement had on them at the National Security Ministry where they were attending a meeting was cloned as calls to that particular phone number were being diverted to an unknown number registered by the name ‘ Monitoring.’

When we left the meeting, we had credibly established that one of our representatives, the only person who was using an Android phone, his phone was cloned. And that all the messages and conversations we were having on our platform, he could no longer assess. So what we did was we flashed his phone immediately.

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor added: “We discovered just this morning, that calls from his phone were being diverted to another phone. When we searched for it online through True Caller, it’s called ‘Monitoring’ on Vodafone.”

But Mr Oppong Nkrumah has vehemently dismissed the allegations stating that the National Security Ministry has proper and legitimate ways of obtaining information to assist in its investigations.

“Consistent with standard practices, the phones of all visitors are kept at the reception of the Ministry. The Ministry has no basis to and did not tamper with the phones of the convenors.

The conveners were invited for a meeting to which they voluntarily attended. The allegation that they were coerced into a meeting is therefore untrue. Additionally, in instances where the Agencies of the Ministry have need to investigate the electronic devices of a person, legal methods such as a proper court warrant are employed. The phone cloning allegation is also therefore false and baseless. The public is therefore advised to disregard the said allegation
