Sam George, the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values measure’s principal proponent and Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has expressed his mounting dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s tardiness in handling legal challenges to the measure.
The draft law has generated a lot of public discussion and encountered legal challenges in its attempt to criminalise and restrict LGBTQ+ activism and activities in Ghana.
Sam George contended that the extended postponement of the court’s ruling is impeding the appropriate operation of the legislative and executive arms of the government.
He emphasised the urgency of a prompt conclusion, pointing out that these instances could have far-reaching effects.
The Ningo-Prampram MP claims that politicians and government officials are uncertain as a result of the Supreme Court’s inaction.
He is pleading with Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to accelerate the cases’ hearings and settlement, highlighting the cases’ clear consequences for top-level governance and decision-making.
“The decision on this issue, which keeps power in the hands of the legislative and the executive branch, is the most significant case before the Supreme Court. Because there isn’t a case before the Ghanaian Supreme Court right now that impacts the legislative and executive branches, His Lordship Justice Yoni Kulendi’s quorum ruling was made.
“We believe that and hold the view that in light of the judgment of the Supreme Court in that case, which deals extensively with the same matters raised by Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky, the Chief Justice must empanel the Supreme Court and determine the matter in tandem with what her colleagues in that panel have done,” Sam George said in an interview on Accra based Citi News.
