Let Ofori-Atta finish IMF negotiations – Akufo-Addo tells NPP MPs asking for his sacking

President Akufo-Addo has appealed to the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Members of Parliament demanding the dismissal of the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to allow the latter some time to conclude negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before any talks of resignation.

The President believes the negotiation with the IMF could be disrupted if Ken Ofori-Atta is sacked or forced to resign.

This came up after a meeting between President Akufo-Addo and NPP Members of Parliament over their demands for the Finance Minister to be sacked over his abysmal management of the economy which is struggling.

The NPP MPs on Tuesday, October 2022, held a press conference during which they called for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen.

The Member of Parliament for the Asante-Akim North Constituency, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who spoke on behalf of the MPs at a press conference on Tuesday said dismissing Ofori-Atta and Mr Adu Boahen will bring renewed confidence in the economy.

“The recent development within the economy is of major concern to our caucus and our constituents. We have made our grave concern known to our president through the parliamentary leadership and the leadership of the party without any positive response,” he said.

He added: “We are by this medium communicating our strong desire that the president changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry without further delay in order to restore hope to the financial sector and reverse the downward trend in the growth of the economy,”

Sources say the disgruntled MPs were not happy that the engagement with the President did not yield their desired results.

It remains to be seen if indeed they will carry out their threat of frustrating government business in Parliament.
