Galamsey: After the government’s ultimatum expires on October 10, organised labour launches a strike.

Beginning on October 10, 2024, most Ghanaian workers might not report to work since the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called a statewide strike.
The group clarifies that the reason behind its decision is the government’s inability to follow through on its threat to ban all mining in the nation’s forest reserves.

The TUC put up three main demands a few days ago, one of which was the immediate removal of all mining equipment from regions near waterways and forest reserves.
Additionally, they demanded the deployment of the military and police, along with strict directives to destroy or remove all mining and earthmoving machinery inside forest reserves and close to bodies of water.
The group’s worries are a result of the general public’s outcry following the most recent batch of JoyNews hotline documentaries, which showed how illicit mining activities have gravely contaminated river bodies.

A week later, organised labour says the government is still not doing anything.

Joshua Ansah, the group’s secretary general, declared that the unions are steadfast in their resolve to cease operations on October 10, 2024.
