Ejura Sekyedumase Health Directorate organizes pregnancy school at Aframso

The Health Directorate of the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipality in the Ashanti Region has organized a pregnancy school for pregnant women at Aframso, a suburb in the municipality.

According to the Municipal Health Director, Courage Anku, the motive for their initiative is based on the fact that pregnant women in the area dislike attending hospitals for anti-natal care, a conduct which is worrying and must be discouraged.

“When pregnant women attend hospital, after 16 weeks of gestation we give them sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine which improves birth outcomes. They are required to take the medicine at least 5 times before they give birth, but in our area here, some pregnant women take the medicine only twice before they give birth which is not good. So the Health Directorate decided to step up our efforts to educate the pregnant women on everything they need to know from the first month of pregnancy till they deliver. This will ensure they deliver healthy babies.

Courage Anku added, “the Bible says for lack of knowledge my people perish, we’ve made them now aware that they have a responsibility as pregnant women to be attending hospital for anti-natal care and I believe going forward they’ll be doing the right thing to keep themselves and their babies alive during and after delivery.”

Some of the pregnant women in an interview expressed gratitude to the Health Directorate for the knowledge they’ve imparted to them and committed to applying whatever they’ve been taught to ensure that they deliver safely.
