Gov’t reopens Ghana Manganese Company

Government has directed the reopening of the Ghana Manganese Company Ltd.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh, reversed the shutdown order after a crunch meeting with the officials of the company and other stakeholders today.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, days ago ordered the Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL) located in Tarkwa in the Western Region to stop all mining, exploration and export of minerals with immediate effect.

The order came after a financial analysis of the company’s operations between 2010 and 2017 revealed that it had caused revenue loss of about $360 million (GH¢1.94 billion) to the state.

But the Ghana Manganese Company disputed the claims by the Lands Ministry that it owes the state more than $300 million in taxes.

The company prior to the shutdown has been under investigation since February 2019 after preliminary checks of its finances revealed several infractions.

Meanwhile, a Committee has however been put in place to probe the sticky issues and claims that the Ghana Revenue Authority owes them up to 20 million dollars in VAT revenue.
