Prosecute Journalists whose false reportage caused Ejura mayhem – Abronye

The Bono Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye says he expects tthe prosecution of any media house whose report is found by the Committee of Inquiry to have sparked the riot in Ejura leading to the death of two people and injuries to four others.

He believes false media reportage incited the youth of Ejura to go on a needless rampage and leading to deaths.

The Ministerial Committee charged to probe the chaos at Ejura in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, has submitted its findings to the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery.

The three-member committee made the presentation at the conference room of the Interior Ministry on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 after holding two weeks of a public hearing.

The Chairman of the Committee, Justice George Kingsley Koomson during the presentation of the report said “I want to let you know that we attached serious importance to the work and dedicated ourselves to all issues with meticulous attention and details. Having assured ourselves after listening to 22 witnesses and reviewed volumes of documents including audio and videos, we have come with our findings and proffered some recommendations. And we hope the government through your good self [Interior Minister] will give a good ear to them and try to accept and implement them.”

Commenting on the issue in an interview with host Henry Lord on Ejura-based Naagyei FM, Kwame Baffoe stated that he’ll doubt the credibility of the committee report if it fails to capture the fact that media publications fueled the disturbance.

“When the committee report is made public and I realize it does not capture the fact that certain media reportage influenced the youth of Ejura to go on the rampage leading to the murder of two people, I will say the committee’s work is incomplete. If it turns out that it is part of the committee’s recommendation, those whose false reportage caused the mayhem must be charged with murder and prosecuted because people died to serve as a deterrent to journalists who spread false information.”

President Akufo-Addo ordered Interior Minister Ambrose Dery to conduct a Public Inquiry into the circumstances that led to the Ejura killings.

Two people were shot dead while six others sustained various degrees of injuries at Ejura after security officers allegedly opened fire on angry youth protesting the murder of social activist Muhammed Ibrahim popularly known as Kaaka.

This comes after an activist of the #FixTheCountry movement, Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaaka was killed by unknown assailants for his advocacy at Ejura Sekyeredumase.

He is said to have had his head clubbed in his home Friday night by the assailants until he became unconscious and was rushed to the Ejura Government Hospital. He was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi where he died Monday afternoon.
