The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Sammi Awuku has said the party will not allow complacency to set in, following the re-election of ex-President John Mahama as the opposition NDC’s Flagbearer for the crucial 2020 election.
Mr Mahama trounced his contenders in last Saturday’s presidential primaries by securing 213,443 votes representing 95.24% of the total vote cast.
But some members of the ruling NPP believe that despite his landslide victory, Mr Mahama will be no match for President Akufo Addo and will be a walkover in the next general election because then-candidate Akufo Addo beat him in the 2016 election, by polling 5,716,026 as against John Mahama’s 4,713, 277 votes, representing 53.85% and 44.40 by of total vote cast respectively.
Speaking in an interview, Sammi Awuku urged his fellow party executives to disabuse their minds of such thinking and put their shoulders to the wheel and work hard to deliver a much more resounding victory for the party in 2020.
“No NPP member should think we already know ex-President Mahama and have beaten him before so his coming back will be an easy victory for the NPP. For me, whoever is elected the Flagbearer of the NDC, my strategy towards that campaign is that we’ll run a strong campaign even more than Jehovah’s Witnesses. Wherever we could not go in 2016, we’ll be there in the next election, we’ll take our campaign to the Ghanaian people and tell them our record of achievement since assuming office and convince them to vote again for us to continue our good work.
“That’s the approach the NPP will adopt and that’s what we expect both rank and file to adopt. No one should see Mahama’s election as a done deal for NPP. Please, whoever is on social media thinking so should have a re-think. Until the last ballot is counted and the results declared in our favour we will work till the final whistle. The NPP will not be complacent in 2020, the NPP treats the Mahama candidature as we would have treated Atunbiga’s candidature. President Akufo Addo himself will campaign times two as he campaigned in 2016 because we don’t joke with our votes and we are wide awake.”
