Strike in six Regions illegal – GNAT National Leadership

The leadership of GNAT says the six regional chairmen who have declared strike in their jurisdiction have no justification to embark on the industrial action.

At least some six Regional chairmen of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Tuesday declared strike in their respective regions following what they said is the failure by the employer to resolve the many challenges confronting members.

Striking teachers in the specified regions abandoned the classroom regardless of the fact that today is the re-opening across the country.

The strike which took effect today, September 10, 2019 is happening in Northern, Upper west, East, Volta, Central and Greater Accra regions.

But the leadership of GNAT in Press conference says all the 10 issues enumerated by the chairmen are still being discussed with relevant authorities.

“…they are issues that we’re discussing, which is ongoing, and which by the labour practice makes it illegal for us even to say that  we are going on strike when the door has not been closed.

Addressing the media a while ago, General Secretary of the Association, David Ofori Acheampong said the regional heads have no right to declare a strike.

“…the law is clear that if there are ongoing discussions, there are no deadlocks, somebody is not putting special impediments in your way not to make progress, you have no right to declare a strike.
