Anti-galamsey demo: Non-prosecution of 'miscreant' protesters will encourage culture of impunity – NPP Youth Wing

Today, Thursday, October 3, in Accra, marks the start of a three-day protest in which demonstrators are calling for the immediate release of 53 demonstrators from Democracy Hub who were detained at last week’s anti-galamsey demonstration.

The goal of the protest, which runs through October 5, is to draw attention to the continuous harm that illicit mining, or galamsey as it is known locally, is causing to the environment.

The protest march will start from Legon Okponglo and proceed to the Black Star Square, with participants following a route permitted by the police.

The approved route passes by important sites such the Airport Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, Okponglo Traffic Light, Legon Stadium, and National Service Secretariat before arriving at Independence Square, Parliament, and the Electoral Commission Office.

The protest, which is expected to draw hundreds of participants, has acquired significant traction on social media under the hashtags “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey.”
The activists intend to raise awareness to the ongoing struggle against illicit mining, which is wreaking havoc on Ghana’s environment, as well as the detention of their fellow protestors.

The Ghana Police Service, meanwhile, has warned that if there are good reasons to think that the demonstration could result in a breach of peace during the ceremony, they will remove any people.
