Afoko murder trial: Defence lawyer accused State witness of lies

A Defense lawyer has accused a state prosecution’s witness who is testifying in the case in which Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi are standing trial for murder of peddling lies in court.

Madam Zuweira Issaka, a 5th witness in the murder trial who was led to give evidence state among other things that late Adams Mahama revealed those who poured acid on him.

The witness told the court that the deceased, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, mentioned the names of the accused persons to all those who were with him at the emergency ward.

But, under cross-examination from lawyer Andrews Vortia, the witness, gave account contrary to what some of the earlier witnesses have said in court.

When asked whether Doctors and Nurses at the emergency ward were also witnesses to the pronouncements from the deceased that the accused persons were the ones that poured acid on him, the witness said that she could not confirm that.

It was then put to her that, the evidence, she gave to the court was just a figment of her own imagination, but the witness disagreed.

Counsel, pointed out that, whether the doctors or nurses heard or did not hear the deceased mentioning the names of those who the poured acid on him could equally be applied to her, but Madam Issaka disagreed.

According to the witness, they heard what the deceased said because their attention was focused on him, while he received treatment.

It was then the case of counsel that other persons like Nuhu, Razak and Mariama did not hear the deceased mention the names of Afoko and Asabke, for which reason the state has not used then as witnesses.

But, the witness disagreed.

The witness told the court that, she did not hear what the deceased and Tawfik Murtala, another witness in the case discussed when asked, what the deceased discussed with one Tawfiq. But held the deceased spoke to the Tawfik.

Counsel for Afoko, who was supposed to cross-examine the witness was unavailable, meanwhile the witness had to go back to Tamale due to some challenges.

The trial was adjourned to March 30, 2021.

Background

Afoko, a farmer and his accomplice are being held on charges of conspiracy to commit crime to wit murder and murder.

They have pleaded not guilty before the Court, which is composed of a seven-member jury.

The late Mahama suffered severe bodily injuries after a substance suspected to be acid was allegedly poured on him in front of his house in Bolgatanga on May 20, 2015.

He later died from the injuries at the Bolgatanga General Hospital.

Afoko was initially the only one standing trial after Alangdi allegedly absconded from Ghana.

After more than three years of trial, the Attorney-General filed a nolle prosequi on January 28, 2019, to discontinue the trial following the arrest of Alangdi, a situation that led to a new trial.
